This week we have an appointment to meet with a dietitian. She will help us design a healthful eating plan so we can build muscle and lose fat. Jim is also scheduled with the exercise experts who will help him establish a fitness program tailored to help him get the best results on the golf course.

Week 3 -- Jim's turn
Jim had his turn in the Bod Pod last week, too. I have to say it's terrific to have his support as we commit to making these lifestyle changes on a longterm basis. He's been a wonderful motivator for me, plus he looks great in the Bod Pod.

Week 2 -- It's a math problem
Yesterday I received my body composition test. Our Gateway to Wellness director, Locke Ettinger, said the Bod Pod is a scientifically accurate way to measure the percent of lean body mass and the percent of fat body mass. This is one test I want to pass by the time we open the program. I got to wear my swimsuit, a cap and didn't eat or drink for two hours before the test. I need to increase muscle strength and lose fat. I'd feel sad, except I kind of already knew going in. The Bod Pod cost $30 for the pretest and will cost $50 for the post-test.
I also had my resting metabolic rate tested for $40. Locke had me breathe through a tube and the machine measured my oxygen, carbon dioxide and heart rate. It took about 15 minutes. The information from this test gives me nutritional and calorie information. Now it's my job to adjust the number of calories I'm eating in order to meet the goals and objectives I want. The machines definitely get the easy jobs, but with the GTW staff help I can do it.

Week 1 to a new "us"
This week I have made an appointment in the Health and Performance Center with Allison to sit in the bod pod and to get my resting metabolic rate assessment. I am also registered and participating in Trevor Smith's Core Strength Training program...exercising and weight lifting on Monday and Thursday evenings.
It is exciting to be taking these steps....and somewhat scary. Can Jim and I really pull this off? Next week I will start sharing the evidence (photographs proving I am really committed to do this).

Getting Started
We are so excited about DRMC's Gateway to Wellness Program. As your leader....I am going to be the first to improve my health and the health of my family. Watch this blog weekly to learn about our journey and to follow our results. Next Monday, the 20th, log in to see the embarrassing "before" pictures. Our goal is to lose 15 pounds in 8 weeks....and of course, some inches too.
